Schools or My Lack of Schools

I had high hopes of returning home and getting the girls into the local school, I tried to apply 4 months ago when I first found out we were coming home, but told I could not, so I waited until the week before coming home to apply.

I completed the form added a covering letter explaining we were returning back to the UK and would really love to know what school the girls were going to before the end of term so I could show them their school.

I heard nothing from them, and after calling every day I managed to get through to someone who said they were waiting for the schools to come back to them and I would hear something before the end of the term.. It got to Thursday and still nothing so
called again, where I was told, they had still not processed the application and would get to it on Friday, so they lied to me.!

I felt awful that I was calling every day, but I wanted to know the schools we had been allocated, so I called again yesterday (Friday) where I was told that I had not got any of my 3 choices of schools even though the 3rd school is new and not full, but as I don’t live in the area the girls can’t   I was though given a school out of area, when I asked if this was a “good” school I was met with silence,  then followed up with, “we don’t hold the Ofsted reports here”, so in the middle of Gulliver’s, yes we are making use of the annual pass..! I checked the Ofsted report and now understand the silence..!

Some quotes from the Ofsted Report..
“The school serves an area of largely housing association homes, with some of it providing temporary accommodation for families. The proportion of pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities is above the national average. Many of these pupils have emotional or behavioural difficulties.” NICE..!

I don’t expect any special treatment, but my 3rd choice of school which is not full is only 2miles away and did not grant us a place on the grounds that we do not live in the area, but we can be given a school 5 miles away and we are certainly not in the catchment area.??

The girls have never lived in the UK and I wanted them to have a “nice” school where they can meet friends in the local area, and we could become part of the community. The girls are “3rd  culture kids” they may look the same as their peers but they say and do things that are different, so there will be some adjustment for them, luckily they are young enough to adapt, they are even losing their American accents hooray (a symptom of an International school education!)

So what now.. well you can imagine yesterday I was working on over-drive, I had been told some of the school in the villages are not full and are nice schools. So I managed to talk to two lovely people, who were still working after the school had broken up for
the summer.

Even though they could not give me an answer they both took my telephone number and promised to speak to the admission department at the council. I even got a phone call back after 20 mins saying she had called them and she will be back to me early next week, and did I mind the girls being in the same class, as they teach Year 1 and 2 together, I don’t mind, but they may..!

It restored my belief in UK schools and people, and there are great schools who work well in spite of the system.

So what do I do if I don’t get the next two schools on my list.? I am not the type of person who can home school, and I have a business that needs me full-time to get it off the ground, so maybe I have no option other than to send them to a private school until I can get them into a “good” school, and hope that it doesn’t take that long as we don’t have the money.

So let’s keep everything crossed that next week we have a school, and I am not looking to get a loan to pay for a private school.

Weather, Adverts, & Exercise

I have been in the UK for just over a week now, things are slowing slotting into place, the house should be finished within a couple of weeks and we have been attacking the garden which after 7 years of neglect needed some TLC.

Amelie is finding the adverts a novelty and is now telling us what we need to buy, “Nanny do you have  crystal’s for the dishwasher” and telling me if I use Vo5 in the shower I will get curly hair..  Does she not realise I spend 4 hours in the hairdressers getting it straighten..!

You forget that she has never been exposed to adverts; I am not looking forward to the run up to Christmas! She has already spent an afternoon with the Tesco direct book, pen and paper working out what she wants., god help me I need to sell some
bags.!

Mia is still running around without clothes on whenever possible, I did think this would stop when we got to the UK as it would be too cold, but she doesn’t seem to feel the cold, I am going to bed in sweat tops and she is naked on top of the covers… strange child!

Talking about the weather – everyone keeps asking me how I coping with the terrible weather at the moment, but really it doesn’t bother me, just as long as I have warm clothes I am fine. We lived in 35 degrees for the past 3 years and the kids hardly went out to play, they even stopped wanting to swim.  I am enjoying not sweating ALL the time and not having a shower at least twice a day.. Now ask me how I am coping in the winter may be another question..!

We have joined Gulliver’s World for the remainder of the year, the girls love it, but Philippe’s face when he had to pay was a picture, it’s only 5 mins from the house so we will make good use of it. Yesterday we went to Dinosaur Park , and got to make slime and ice cream, great fun.

June 10th was my last aerobic class, apart from one 30min bike ride I have done nothing, I justified the lack of exercise on the fact I lived in a 3 story house and I was moving boxes most days.. Yesterday was the day I got back on the horse, quick run round the lake and some squats, press-ups and sit-ups, Mmm today I can hardly move and sitting on the toilet I tell you is proving  difficult..! To exercise today or not..???

The Goodbye

The day has come for us to leave Vietnam. It has been a hell of week, the packing took 4 men 3 days, but it is all in the container
ready to set sail.

I have very casually said my goodbyes, that’s the thing about expat life you meet wonderful friends and then they either leave you or you leave them.

I had breakfast with 3 of my good friends yesterday Cathy, Carrie & Rebecca, they have been with me every step of the way with
Mia Tui being my sounding board for fabrics, and my back bone when things go wrong.

Rebecca will now become the main contact for Mia Tui in Vietnam, luckily I have set it all up so she won’t have to walk the markets, but if I know  Rebecca she will want to source some funky exclusive fabric for a Christmas special, so she will head
into the hot, busy market, and we will all be thankful when we are wearing  it!

Kathy what would I have done without you in the last few months, next year we will holiday in Europe, I had better sell some bags
otherwise we are camping in my back garden!

Simone, well you went and left me 4 weeks ago, but you are still chief Mia Tui sampler! Thanks for everything, I am going to really miss you.

Karrie – I  can not give you a mention, you have done your 1st year back home,  there has not been a lunch, coffee or Friday wine by the pool where we haven’t thought about you, get you butt on that plane in Feb and I will do my best to be here for a
reunion!

A big thanks to all the girls at aerobics, I loved our Monday’s & Thursday mornings, you have all been a great friends.

This is like the Oscars, who else can I thank for being part of my life! You know there will be someone who I missed out, and I will offend them.! So to everyone I have ever known – Thank you..!

I have had an adventure for the past 7 years, Asia has seen me get married, have two girls, and start a business, I will miss  Asia, and all its uniqueness, but I won’t miss….

Seeing men pissing in the road all the time!
Not having to repeat myself 5 times
People saying yes when they mean NO!
Bumpy roads
Crap toilet paper
Paying £5 for Branston Pickle!

There is a lot more that I will miss, cheap manicure’s and pedicure’s to name one!

We are off to Hong Kong for two days, I get to say goodbye to another lot of friends, although most have left for the summer.

So on to the next chapter in my life – I wonder what it will bring? Cold feet in the winter I’m sure of that..!
